Date: 7/26/2005 Title: The Effective Way To combat Microbial Contamination GERMISEP is a disinfectant tablet. It dissolves in water rapidly to give a clear solution of hypochlorous acid(HOCI), buffered at a pH optimal for germicidal activity. The 'non-ionized' hypochlorous acid has lethal action on pathogens due to its clorination action on cell protein or enzyme system. GERMISEP dissolves to give a solution buffered at pH 6.5. At this pH, the undissoclated HOCI available for germicidal activity is 90%. Liquid hypochlorite formulations are unstable at pH values which are required for optimal activity. Laundry bleaches which are currently used in some hospitals have pH values in the region of 12 and have negligible germicidal activity due to the small amount of undissociated HOCI available.
